An Edo classic wood and lacquer figure representing Buddhist deity, Fudo Myo-o, fierce protector of Buddhist law. His name translates "the immovable or unshakable one" and his threatening appearance guards the Law of Buddhism, and he is equipped to guide the spiritual traveler past temptation on to the path of enlightenment. He is finely detailed with curly hair, bulging glass eyes and grimacing mouth. His intense stare expresses his wrath against evil. He is seated with his legs crossed holding a weighted rope in his left and a sword in his right hand, these attributes help him subdue evil forces. He wears robes draped around his waist and over the left shoulder. He also wears brass bracelets, and wire rope with loop and ball that show traces of gilding. The figure is carved from wood and painted with dark lacquer.The sword has been restored. Some minor loss and pitting to lacquer that are commensurate with age.Dimensions: 6" W X 4 1/2" D X 7" H
