Diamonds have captivated humanity for centuries, revered for their unparalleled beauty, brilliance, and rarity. These timeless gemstones have adorned the crowns of kings, graced the fingers of lovers, and become symbols of enduring commitment. At Haig's of Rochester, we recognize the allure and significance of diamonds, and we invite you to embark on a journey with us as we delve into the fascinating world of these exquisite gems.

The 4 C's
At the heart of understanding diamonds lies the renowned 4 C's: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight.

  • Cut

    • Often considered the most crucial factor, the cut determines a diamond's brilliance and fire. A well-cut diamond reflects light with breathtaking radiance, creating mesmerizing sparkle and scintillation.

  • Color

    • Diamonds come in a spectrum of colors, ranging from colorless to fancy vivid hues. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond color on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Each subtle variation in color can significantly impact a diamond's appearance and value.

  • Clarity

    • Clarity refers to the presence of internal and external flaws, known as inclusions and blemishes, respectively. Diamonds with fewer imperfections are rare and highly valued. The GIA grades clarity on a scale ranging from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions visible to the naked eye).

  • Carat Weight

    • Carat weight measures a diamond's size, with one carat equal to 0.2 grams. While carat weight influences a diamond's size, it's essential to consider all factors collectively to appreciate its true beauty and value.

While the 4 C's serve as a fundamental guide, they only scratch the surface of a diamond's allure. Each diamond possesses its unique character, shaped by its journey from deep within the Earth's crust to the skilled hands of master craftsmen.
